our day at u of r

Today on 7/30/08 we the Freedom scientists went to u of r. We were at three diffrent stations in the u of r lab. In our labs we observed the algae from the west side of the beach and also the east side of the beach. We were trying to determine why the eastside of beach was dirtier than the westside of the beach. We came up with the conclsion that the eastside of the beach was dirtier because there was more algae on the eastside than the westside which made the water look more filthy and the algae also pulled mad dirt into the water. When we were at the lab we looked at the diffrent water and bacteria samples under a microscope.

Dis is so fun the way we got to look at all the bacteria that is in the water at charollte beach.The only thing that i didnt like was wen we had to go in the water with all of that alaga and green stuff it was very nasty and stank.Today in the lab we looked at are ressults and we found things like dead worms fish scale chip tooth n ect.Cant wait to see what we r gonna do tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!This video is about what we did today so check it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(aiam the one with the wit jacket)

Today at the u of r we went to the science lab where we worked with microscope and the plates to gather up information for our question “why is the east side of charolatte beach dirtier then the west side of charolatte beach”. In conclusion we learned that science is very fun and entertaning and u can learn a lot by having fun in something that we love and that we all can share.

Day Three At U Of R (Get Real Science Camp)

Today we looked at our samples that we took from Lake Ontario. We saw organisms, algae, bacteria, sand, and E. coli under the microscope. We the Freedom scientists also took notes as we were working. Then we were blessed with pizza for lunch. Now we are blogging. We had so much fun are get real science camp.

Day 2 at Charlotte Beach

Today we collected evidence for our study of Ontario lake beach. We gathered a lot of information for our reseach and we came to a conclusion that the east side is dirtier then the west side of the lake.

Quelshawn was our roving reporter for the day.

Day 1 of Summer Camp 2008

Today was our first day at camp. Karai, our reporter on the scene, did a fantastic job coming with interesting questions on the spot – “Live from Channel Five”.

When the scholars arrived at Charlotte Beach we learned that the beach was closed for swimming due to unhealthy conditions in the water, but we were able to go into the water thanks to our waders. The scholars did a great job learning the water testing methods including use of the secchi disk (to measure water turbidity), the orange balls (to observe current), temperature and pH probes, water sampling bags and observations of algae, beach conditions and wind direction. We used a webbing diagram to develop a model of what might be contributing to poor water quality. Using their model as starting point, the scholars worked together to come up with questions about the beach that they wanted to study. After voting they arrived at the following question: “Why is one side of the beach dirtier than the other?” Tomorrow they’ll work on a plan for collecting evidence using the tools available to them. Then they’ll collect their data at the beach. We’re off to a great start – Go Freedom Scientists!
