Today we got to the University of Rochester and when we got there Ms.Alicia gave us the safety talk about how not to touch our bacteria filled cups and then our eyes because they were contaminated. After that we went into the lab and saw the samples from Charlotte beach. We did 3 areas of the beach on Monday and the first area was the dirtiest and on Tuesday the second area was the dirtiest. To me it was cool because some people don’t get the chance to see what they’re swimming in.

Today was an okay day.First we went to the lab and we had looked threw the microscopes. We observed and counted the bacteria from the water samples we took on day 1 and 2.Next we ate lunch the pizza was great!.After that we went back the room were we mad a map of the beach and we also made a chart of all the data we collected from day 1 and 2 at Charlotte Beach.
Now we are at the computer lounge blogging about what we did today. In about 20 minutes we are going to get back on the u or r shuttle and going back to freedom school, which is located on 630 North Goodman. Come and visit.

Travis
When we first got here we made a picture of the model we did yesterday. Today we put on the hip waders and went into the water, and then we started taking samples. Then we took the temperature of the water. Then we made a poster of the beach and how it looks and what’s on it. We did a web chart of our model of the cycle of what affects the water. We asked some questions about whether the water was dirty today.
The beach was closed today and the water changed from yesterday. Yesterday the water in the west side was clearer than the east side, but today the whole beach was dirty. I liked the hip waders and making the model of the beach. I didn’t like how the waves were hitting me while we were taking samples and when the birds were getting close.
Kendall
When we first got here we went out to the water and got into the groups. I did the whirl pak bags first with Alicia, then went to the second site and we did the temperature and the pH. The temperature and the pH were higher today than yesterday because it was warmer outside. The third part with Kristin we used the secchi disk. Because the water was dirtier down in the third site it was a better experience than yesterday because we could actually make measurements. We finished talking about our models and we made a web chart to compare to what things would effect the dirty water.
Today I didn’t like all the seaweed and more yucky stuff than yesterday. Yesterday I didn’t get yucky stuff into my bag, but today I did. And also we actually got to use the secchi disk.
Khadijah
Today was better than yesterday; we got done with our work faster. We got to know the equipment better. I know how to do the secchi disk because its mad easy. We did the model, and made it better than the one we did yesterday. The water felt better today because it was more dirty. I liked walking along the beach. I didn’t like wearing the boots, because they were hot and I sweat a lot.
Evan
Today we got to go into the water with boots called hip waiters. We looked and saw that the part with more algae had even more algae, but the clean part had more algae than the day before. We did the same thing we did yesterday by using the secchi disc and the test samples. After that we reorganized our chart of the way bacteria got into the water.

Nancy
We went to get the boots on and then we went to get the jackets on and then we went into the water and we took samples of each section of the water. We checked the temperature and the pH of the water; the water was a base. The secchi disk told us how dirty or clean the water was. It rained overnight, and the waves pushed the algae over so the cleaner section was more dirty today. We realized that the hotter the temp is the more the algae increases and expands. Bacteria also helps algae grow.
My favorite part today was when we put on the boots and the vest and checked the temp of the water and the sand. Also when we did the \web chart. I liked everything! I talked to this lady asking a lot of questions who wanted us to do some cheers from the Freedom school. She interviewed me a little bit and asked us what we were doing and I told her we were scientists for today and told her what we were doing. I got to use this computer to write this blog!

Hey, ‘WE’ Side Scientists!!!! You guys have been doing great these past 2 days. You have gotten so much accomplished. You got down and dirty and collected data, you formed a research question with the knowledge you had of the beach, and produced a model. You guys are awesome! Can’t wait to see the bacteria plates. Have fun in the laboratory!

We came from Freedom school taking at trip to Charlotte Beach with the U of R students to go to science camp. The reason of the science camp was to provide questions telling why the beach was closed. We came up with a hypothesis stating: was temepture a factor in algae growth, and if algae effects bacteria growth. In order to answer our hypothesis we tested different parts of the beach for different measurements like the pH and turbidity. Also, we tested the temperature using the temperature probe and the most important part was when we took bacteria samples also know as bacteria platting.

We all decided to come up with a group name and as a result our name was chosen to be “WE SIDE”. We thought about coming up with a group chant but we haven’t accomplished that.
We used waders that went up to about our thighs, which kept our legs from getting wet and all types of bacteria getting on them. We had lunch from Lorraine’s Cafe which provided us with all different types of sandwiches, chips, and drinks. At the end we got ice cream from Abbots which was very delicious.

Congrats on a fantastic first day campers! Everyone did a GOOD JOB! Hope we can keep up this pace all week. We got our name, WE Side Scientists. We got a question, How does algae and temperature affect bacteria? Now we just got to go out there get dirty and collect some more samples. So that’s awesome, Alicia, Kristin and I are all very glad to be working with you all. Have fun tomorrow!
