Kaitlin,

I complete agree! So often students are overlooked or considered unable to learn if they don't fit a conventional mold of an abled student. It is the responsibility of the educator to learn enough about their students so that they can provide opportunities which promote the development of conceptual understanding utilizing a student's individual strengths. As such, we recognize that learning is an individualized process and can not be approached the same way for every student. It's no wonder that too many of our nation's students aren't finding success and engagement in school!

What I thought was interesting was that the MOVIE didn't portray him as stupid. It portrayed the teachers as unwilling to help or teach to his abilities. It showed how a lack of attention to student strengths can do such a disservice to a student. Imagine if Michael Oher had he not begun attending this school.

I actually just watched this movie a couple nights ago, and you did a great job summarizing the messages I came away with too. It was disturbing that most of the teachers preferred to take a negative, pessimistic attitude towards a student's educational rights. It takes more energy and time to act as a hurdle blocking another's path then it is to maintain momentum along side them. Why choose a career in education if you're not willing to be part of student forward progress?
One more point i also took from this movie was how important it is for students to have people from their community as advocates. The support Michael received from his teacher and family challenged the status quo and uncovered opportunities. It reminded me that advocating for equal student access to knowledge and success is at the forefront of my responsibilities as a teacher.

Good movie!!! I'm glad you picked up on the teaching aspect too. One thing I was really impressed by was their willingness, and intelligence, to give oral exams to Mike. The coach at the beginning with his efforts to get Mike into the school was very inspirational too.

Jake,
It's hard for me to imagine you doing anything other than being an educator! The circuitous route in life is certainly the most exciting. I hope for years and years you are pleased with your decision.
